How to Find Peace | John 14:8-31

Wish it was Sunday. I'm sorry. Okay, it's in the eighties. Okay. Anyway, welcome to the Bible Guys. It is Monday, and we are Jeff and Chris and we are here to bring you the finest uh Biblical. Discussion, artisanally crafted. Yes nice. Yeah. Before we get into that, we have a segment called Guess the word. Guess the word? Now, fun is We have done this in a long time. It's like a taboo type thing, I know. So if you're watching on video Hopefully we're gonna be able to put the words on the screen that I cannot say. And it's my goal to go well. That you may not say, you can say them. Oh, yeah, you may, I. May not say them. Sorry, May I have a napkin? Yeah, you can have a napkin if you get it yourself. So and so I'm gonna go ahead. And uh give me one of those days it is. I'm gonna go ahead and uh invite the audience to try to beat you. Okay, so they're racing against Okay, it's a race then, Okay, okay, here you go. The first word, Here we go. Ready, the spirit descended like a dove. Dove, I don't think. I don't think I blew it here. Yeah. I wasn't allowed to say bird symbol, white olive brand or peace. Oh I think that's say all a branch. No brand Olive? The brand? Oh the brand? Yeah yeah, the brand? Okay, excellent, Okay, good, we got it. You know what. I haven't looked at these at also, I haven't thought through them. And this is hard. Okay, Okay, here we go. Ready, Yes, uh, this is brutal. Okay, here we go, ready, Okay, love and power. Oh no, oh no, I got all to say. Power, okay, love and power to the people? Man. Who am I the type of person like a surfer dude? Like it, like a like a in this hippies? Yes, yeah, and in the sixties okay. Because actually it says seventies because they were sixties and seventies. Yeah, I wasn't a lot of the best hippies were in the sixties. Yes they were. And it says love TI die peace, which I didn't say, peace and flower. What did you say? You said I said power? I said no, I said, uh. Peace and power. No, you said what did you say? Did I say something in power? Man to the people? Man? Did I say one day? I don't know. I don't know. I wasn't paying attention. I wasn't either. I was picking up on the attitude. Oh no, I was picking up on thettude. Well, we'll find out. I was doing the voice. We'll find out I was trying to do the voice. Okay, all right. It's like it's like cars, you. Remember, Well, I feel like I feel like I should get points regardless, yes, and then if you blew it, then you should get points deducted from your total. Wow. A thousand, a thousand? Sure? How many are we giving the fans for getting it right before me? Uh? Six? Six? See the people know now you just exposed yourself because on this one. Because I always give them like ten thousand points or fifty thousand points, and you're giving them six points. You know why? My points mean way more points are meaningless. You're more substantial. That's right. You know value my point platinum. You've got platinum quality points. I see. Okay, yeah, here we go, we go? Ready? Uh ge whiz? Okay? Are you ready? Yes? This? No? This? No? This note? Uh? Those together make make accord a triad. Uh together they it's a beautiful harmony. Yes, harmony. There you go. Okay. I was allowed to say music, balance, blend or peaceful. Okay, okay, so I was. I was trying my best. To do harmony. Yeah, very nice. Okay, Okay, fans beat me on that one. Uh oh wow, Okay, here we go. Uh, I'm so excited. Herbie was what kind of brand of Volkswagen? Yes, yes, yes, I. Wasn't allowed to say bus, hippie travel, road or van. Okay, but we got a lot of hippie stuff today, right, Okay? What the heck is that? I don't know. Okay, yeah, we had hippie we had harmony, which is kind of a hippie thing than a volkswagon. Okay, doves peace too. And then oh wait a minute, we're in this series called God's Peace. This is what she's doing. We're so clever. It only took us five minutes. Oh yeah, okay, and then finally here's the last one. Okay, gee whiz. When you decide to hold your ground, you could say I am not going to budge, yes, move, and you're not going to also give in surrender it's another word for that treaty agreements. I'm not going to surrender. I'm not going to concede. I'm not going to something your values. I'm not going to lower my values. I'm not going to. When when something when something, when the integrity of something is. Invaded, Boy, I don't know. This is a tough one. The integrity is something is invaded. I'm not going to yeah, wow, okay, all right, when when two people have been so hard, when two people have different side I was allowed to say that, I didn't say it. And two people have different views opinions, sometimes they'll meet in half way and that's called a yes. Oh there you go. Man. That was hard. Yeah, that was really hard. Wow. Yeah, I would definitely say everybody got that before you do? You think so everybody? Uh? It was it was I couldn't say agree or middle or deal, negotiate or sides. Okay, that was hard and you know it was probably a. Well it's easier for compromisers than it is for somebody who stands on principle. Yeah, I said, I said, stand your ground. I know that's what I'm saying. So stand my ground made total sense. I got that one. I'm just not a compromiser. So yeah, yeah, I'm joking. That's what you're saying. You're saying it's not in your purview. It's difficult. It is so far away for my thinking. Yeah, I believe in win win solutions. Uh huh I do. But yeah, well that was rough and that was super what I got. I got. I got four out of five. Yeah yeah, and well I got the fifth one too. But it took a while. Well, sure the fans got that one before me. The fact that it took me so long. Because they're incredible, Our fans are incredible. Let me describe something to you please. During that fifth one, when I couldn't come up with the words, I felt like my mind was going to million miles a minute, and I had no peace. You had no peace. No, do you know what Jesus said about peace? What he said that he would send a comforter who will give you peace, what he will guide you into. Is that in the scripture today, Jeff, it. Is as a matter of fact, let's look at John chapter fourteen. John chapter fourteen is one of your favorite chapters. Yeah, I think we gave that a little bit of effort. I think you. I think you intended to reference John fourteen. I did. I did at some point. Yeah, Okay, I couldn't say it. I go ahead and say it. Hey, I'm setting you up. I'm offering this. Yes. So last week or actually, depending on when this airs, it could be two weeks ago, you had mentioned a scripture and you said, you know how Jesus says, in my father's house, there's many mansaers, we're talking about heaven. It was stuff the pasture week. Yes, And I said, off the coff I said, yeah, John fifteen, but it wasn't Yes, John fourteen, that's correct, And so I heard myself. I heard myself say, yeah, John fifteen. I thought to myself, John fifteen, is vine in the branch, vine in the branch. Not I go to prepare place for you, and then i'm the way, and then peace I give to you all. That's John fourteen. Yes, well we're in. We're in John fourteen today. Here's what I'm saying. Had I just said, it's somewhere around. Here's what I'm saying. I agreed with you. Oh you missed it too. I missed it too. Actually I knew it was in the general zone. To be fair, I said, John fifteen, and you were just going on. You didn't listen. I wasn't. I was. I listened to everybody. I interrupted. I am always riveted by what you're saying. I interrupted you by John fifteen. And so, so you were in the general area, Yes, in the general area. And I appreciate the effort. Yeah, and I appreciate how close you got. Twenty twenty one whatever it takes. Yeah, nope, it's mister mom. Michael Keaton, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was kind of like on horseshoes instead of going instead of getting ring or you. Went to think yeah, only date. Yeah, that's okay, It's okay. So we're going to start off in John chapter fourteen and versus. Let's let's do verse eight of for say it is fun. Philip says to the Lord Lord, show us the Father and we'll be satisfied. And Jesus replied, have I been with you all this time? Philip? And yet you still don't know who I am. Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, So why are you asking me to show him to you? Don't you believe that I am the Father and the Father is in me. The words I speak are not my own, but my Father, who lives in me, does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe because of the work you've seen me. Do I tell you the truth. Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I've done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. If you love me, obey my commandments and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate who will never leave you. He's the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him because he lives with you now and later will be in you. Now. No, I will not abandon you as orphans. I will come to you soon. The world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. And when I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them and reveal myself to each of them. And Judas not Judas is Scariot, but the other disciple with that name said to him, Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large? And Jesus replied, all who loved me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn't love me will not obey me, and remember my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. I'm telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative, that is the Holy Spirit, he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I've told you. I am leaving you with a gift peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So do not be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you. I'm going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I'm going to the Father who is greater than I am. I've told you these things before they happen, so that when they do happen, you'll believe. I don't have much more time to talk to you because the rule of this world approaches. He has no power over me. But I will do what the Father requires of me so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let's be going. Wow. Yeah, that's that's there's a lot in there. There you go. Man. So, so he says the Father is greater than I am, is that because he's in his human state currently. I think partly, yeah, I think so, yeah, I think that's partly it. I also think, as you do, as you've highlighted before, the will comes from the Father, and Jesus does the will of the Father. Right, So there's a submission from Jesus towards the Father. Yeah. That's really good. That's really good. Yeah. The nature, the nature of the Trinity of God, it's it's so hard to understand their relational dynamic and their roles together. The concept even of three and one the triune God is is just a mind blowing concept. And yet it's it's pretty clear in the scriptures that that's exactly who God is. Jesus believed in the Trinity clearly, clearly, right. That's why I read that whole passage there was because of that, was to highlight that part of it. But it's interesting because the real love requires submission, right, And so what you see is you see Jesus submitting to the Father here. But there's other places where the Father says, I will lift his name above every name, and that the name of Jesus. Every knee will bow right right. Capital elve Lord. Yeah, and will declare him Lord, and in heaven and on earth right everywhere, So the Father elevates Jesus. Jesus is elevating the Father. The Holy Spirit's job is to promote the will of the Father and to seal the people until the day of rejemption because of the sacrifice of Jesus. And then he's replacing Jesus in our life with regard to every day interaction. Right when I go away, the Holy Spirit will come to. You and be in you and be in you, yeah, be in me? Yeah yeah, right, I. Mean, I mean think about that concept, right right. I think I told you this, But who was it? What speaker was it? Was it Francis Chan? But I've mentioned it actually in some of my sermons. I've said this before, where people of the Old Testament will get to heaven and we'll say, hey, what was it like to see the burning bush? That must have been amazing, and Roses says, yeah, that was great, But what was it like to have God in your right? And it's like and it's you know, we don't think about that, but the idea that like an Old Testament character in heaven will be like, are you kidding me? You got the privilege of the Holy Spirit of God, the power of living in you all the time. What the heck? Yeah, because the Bible says like with Samson, and the Spirit of God would come upon him and he would do a thing right. But what we have is we have the Holy Spirit in us all the time. For those of us who've trusted Christ. Now, that doesn't mean there's a little spark of divinity in you and that you're a little God right. What it does mean is that God has chosen to indwell you and to empower you and to teach you through the power of His Holy Spirit. The issue is not how much of the Holy Spirit do you have, but how much of you does the Holy Spirit have? Are you surrendering to him? Because so many people have access to the power never flip the switch, they never actually step into it. And another reason why I read this passage is because Jesus connects these things to obedience, right, love of God and obedience. And then this is when when you surrender and decide you're going to do Jesus will. The Holy Spirit's the one that's going to teach you Jesus will. Jesus said, my will only comes from the Father. Right, So the only way you really activate the power of the Holy Spirit is if you truly love God, you choose to obey him. When you begin obeying him is when you begin to release the power of the Holy Spirit in you. Yeah. And by the way, before I continue with my thought, I can't help but to say, everything reminds me of a movie. Usually in a movie, really yeah, I know, I know. Wow, what you said. It's not like you have a little God in you. And I pictured immediately Bill Murray your remember Groundhog Day. Yes, when he's eating this doughnut and he's stuffing it or whatever he's eating at breakfast, and he's trying to tell this this lady and he goes, she goes, you think you're God. And as he's stuffing his face, he goes, well, I'm a God, not the God because he stuffing this thing. It is because he has those powers. Anyway, what I was going to do, what I was going to say, is that is one of those things I think that we, you know, sort of pray wrong, you know, technically, because we say, like God, you know, send your Holy Spirit down, or you know, God, have your spirit, you know, cover this place. And I understand what they're saying. They're saying, God, we want your Holy Spirit's power to be known, to be seen to work mightily. Right. But but isn't it true that we already have all the Holy Spirit that we are ever going to have? Yeh, there's never a time where we say, man, I was, I had an extra dose of the Holy Spirit. You should have seen it, man I was, I was on fire that day. And it's because the Holy Spirit came down and as implying that that you don't have the enough of the Holy Spirit, you had to have more of the Holy Spirit in order. Right, But you already said it. You said it's the Holy you said, it's the Holy Spirit having more of you. Yeah, I think it's a semantical argument a little bit. I agree with you. Technically. I think that my intent as a worship leader, as a preacher, if I pray those things, I think what I'm really asking for is God, help me to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit more right, help me to experience the flow of the Spirit through this place. Help me to experience the closeness of the Spirit in a way that I'm not accustomed to, or whatever. Right now, which is that's more of a surrender kind of a statement as opposed to just just let your hand. And that just happened. It sure did. Sorry about that everybody, to the whole world. I kind of want to answer. It it was a it was a spam thing. Well that would have been even better. But hey, so we're sitting here talking about all the spirit. Actually it's it's probably just one of those voice recording things. Okay, I must have made a list because lately it's brutal. It's getting you. Huh, it's brutal. Okay, so hey, that's that's a great question. But yeah, it is. It is a very different prayer. So I think that sometimes when we hear people say those things, it's it's again, it's not something where I'm like, oh man, they're so dumb or whatever. I don't look at it as a negative thing. I just try to interpret what they're really meaning. Well, the good news is this last week we talked about how the Holy Spirit praise take intercepts your prayer. That's right, takes it to the Father and engroanings we can't comprehend. So the good news is you can pray any way you want to and you're not going to screw it up, right. So what we don't want to do is send the message that maybe there's a right way to pray in the wrong way to pray. I think the right way to pray is to talk to God, and the wrong way to pray is not talk to God. Actually that's it, doesn't that make sense? Yeah, I definitely don't want to scare people off by saying pray the right way. Certain words or there's there's there's a semantical argument. We don't want to do that. Just pray because if you don't, if you're not precise the Holy Spirit. What the passage we read last week was that the Holy Spirit knows our heart, discerns our heart, and takes the prayers to God in groanings. We can't comprehend meaning he's communicating God because it is a little silly. There's a point where God says, your ways aren't my ways, My thoughts aren't your thoughts. So if my thoughts are not his thoughts, how could I possibly even communicate you ever? Talk to your wife and just not have any idea what she's really getting at. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, it's it's right. What do people say only on days that end with. Wife exactly right? Or have you ever had I can't remember when when Jenna was learning to talk. She's my daughter. She's twenty one right now, But when she was little, she just had this drive to communicate. She still will just take up an entire evening talking Hi Jenna. But she when she was little, she wanted to talk and she would just say things to me, but none of it made sense. Sometimes, when she was really like like three years old, she'd have a few of the words she could say and then the rest of it was just babble. I couldn't understand. She's clearly communicating something. He's meaning something. Yes, my granddaughter just recently has started doing this. So she's little, she's she's almost two, and she's the same way. So she's like, begod bit bah blah bah, and she's clearly saying something. Walking away, she's pointing the thing. She's trying to tell you. We just had we just had a moment. I just don't know what the moment was about. So it's why would we think that we could even truly communicate with the creator of the universe when we are so unbelievably limited, and He is so unbelievably expansive. Right, So that's why the Holy Spirit takes our intent translates it to the Father. And yet God tells us over and over, pray to me. Bring your requests, not consistently right, ask big right, and it changes things, it matters. And so yeah, both of those things are true. So just pray, just pray, just talk to God and don't worry about messing it up. But I think you're right that that theologically for the theologians among us. Yes, there's this nuance to it. Yeah, I mean, but God's not going to be mad. I've never told my granddaughter if you can't articulate clearly, stop talking to me. Correct correct. I'm like, oh yeah, but the goal on the podcast is to learn, right, so they're talking it out. It's important. But yeah, the concern is, yeah, don't don't don't make anybody afraid to pray wrong. But here is the promise that we're talking about this week, because this whole week is about promises. And so he's literally saying, I'm leaving you a gift peace of mind and heart, and the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give, so don't be troubled or afraid. And I think people, this is one of the great searches in this generation. Is just peace. Everything is. It's all upheaval all the time, right. Everybody's protesting, people burning stuff, people flipping over cop cars, people fighting, people just typing, so angry and mean, people doom scrolling laid into the night, people upset about something. Somebody said, it's just tension all the time. And Jesus says, the world can't give you the peace you're looking for. It's not possible. You think you can create a utopia by protesting and burning stuff down, You can't the world. There's not a government in the world that can truly give you the peace you're looking for. Right, There's not a system, there's not a decision, there's not a solution. He says. The only real peace you can get is when you learn to love me. You begin to experience My love for you, and the Holy Spirit begins to remind you of what I've taught you and remind you that there's a God in heaven that's already resolved all the things. Because the world you're living in is broken. But the hope that comes through Jesus Christ, and his sacrifice brings all the peace you'll ever need. And that's what he's trying to say. And the Holy Spirit the one who brings that gift. Yeah, that's right. And uh and the peace is miraculous too. And I got to tell you, I'm I'm a I'm I think I'm good with faith like I I Yeah. I think you're a high faith person. I'm a high faith person, but a peace person. I think I'm okay with it. But but I'm not exceptional. And uh, and I don't know what it is. But like I I I used to think that I was Maybe I'm Maybe I'm I used to be better, right, but I experience more anxiety. Maybe maybe it's just through the bumps and bruises of life. I don't know what it is, but here's my point. My point is is that I see people that I admire that have peace. Uh, And I think to myself, Gosh, I wish I hope, I hope that would be me in that situation. Right, you know, something tragic happens. I mean, I've been to funerals, I've been to I've seen tragedies. I've seen things take place. And I've been near people and I experience people who have absolute peace when it doesn't make sense, and i think to myself, Wow, this is amazing. And you know it. The only way that they have that is through the power of the Holy Spirit. You just know, and it doesn't make any sense. It transcends everything, and and and it's because of the promises of God. It's because of God's comfort of who of who he is, and and they trust him, they give it all to him, and none of that. But it's the hope of heaven. It's the hope of it's the hope of all the future and and all that rests in him. And and there are just some people who are overcome with peace, and I'm just blown away by it. Well that's that's why we're doing this whole series on the promises of God, right right, So look, great, before I'm giving you this gift peace of mind and heart, the one before that is the Father sends an advocate as my representative, as the Holy Spirit. He will teach you everything and remind you of everything I've told you. Then he says, my peace comes. Right. So this is why you need to know the promises of God, because the Holy Spirit is always going to use what Jesus has already said to comfort you. And so when you have that moment, that's the moment you find out how much time have I spent spending a God's word and do I really believe it? And then the Holy Spirit just gives you this overwhelming peace when you know the promises of God. You know, God's bigger than your problems. And you know, it's so funny is that was activated almost immediately because well, I guess it wasn't the Holy Spirit. But remember the angels reminded them. Do you remember he said he was going to rise again? Right? And then don't forget? Yeah, do you remember? Yeah? And then it says then they remembered what Jesus said, right, but yeah, that the Holy Spirit had not yet come on them yet at that point. But yeah, that's what God does, right, He reminds, Oh, yeah, that's right. That is true. So our listeners and anybody else who's spending time in God's word every day. There's so much wisdom in that because you're building up a reservoir of peace you don't even know you're gonna need until the moment of that Uh oh yeah, right, well That is definitely our time, so good talk and we will see you hopefully tomorrow on the Bible guys,
